The Satemwa Estate is at the forefront of speciality tea in Malawi and is located on the slopes of the beautiful Thyolo mountain along Africa’s Great Rift Valley. It is indeed Malawi’s highest elevation tea garden. It’s a third generation family business, employing over 2000 local workers who are provided with education and health services to raise standards of living. In 2007 Satemwa became the first Fairtrade registered tea estate in Malawi, and this was followed by UTZ and Rainforest Alliance certifications soon after. They also focus on the environment; they’ve developed wildlife corridors - strips of forest between fields - as homes to an array of flora and fauna. 

With beautifully large and delicate leaves, this tea is made from the bud and the first two leaves gathered from the new shoots of the Salima tea bush varietal. The taste is light with a flowery aroma of cut hay and lemon but with an astringency and character that sets it apart from its cousin green tea.
